GRASSROOT COMMUNITIES

Formation of interfaith groups at grassroot level

Interfaith League Against Poverty (I-LAP) has always believed that lasting peace cannot be imposed from the top; it must grow from the grassroots level where ordinary people live, interact, and influence one another daily. For this reason, I-LAP has consistently focused its peacebuilding and interfaith harmony efforts on communities at the local level across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and Sindh. These interfaith groups include men, women, and youth from different religious and ethnic backgrounds who are encouraged to work together for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Recognizing the important role of young people in shaping society, I-LAP also formed Peace Youth Clubs to involve youth in spreading awareness regarding tolerance, harmony, and responsible citizenship. These clubs provide a platform where young people can openly discuss social issues, challenge prejudice, and learn the importance of respecting diversity.

In many rural and underprivileged areas, where literacy levels remain low, people are often vulnerable to manipulation and hate speech by extremist religious elements. Misinterpretation and misuse of religious teachings can create fear, suspicion, and hostility between communities. Many false accusations, including blasphemy-related cases, most often emerge from small communities where misinformation, personal grudges, and limited awarenes s influence public opinion.

Through consistent engagement, dialogue, and awaren ess sessions, I-LAP’s interfaith groups have helped communities think beyond inherited prejudices and emotional incitement. People are gradually learning to question hatred, build relationships across faith lines, and understand that peaceful coexistence benefits everyone equally.

Today, these grassroots peace initiatives continue to strengthen communities by creating spaces where people listen to one another, share concerns, and work collectively toward a more peaceful, compassionate, and united Pakistan.
